You don’t need an expensive gym membership to stay in shape. There are plenty of methods to work out at home successfully.
There are several reasons why people would want to work out in their homes. One of the main reasons for working out at home is the convenience. Most people have extremely busy schedules and may not have the extra time to drive to a gym. It’s much easier to just go down the stairs to your workout room.
Another reason is that many people simply can’t afford the cost of a quality gym, fees of which can be anywhere from $30 to several hundred dollars per month. Not an option when you’re on a tight budget.
So, if one of these reasons or any others apply to you, what can you do to stay in shape? The answer is simple: Work out at home.
Here are a few tips and suggestions to help you hit the ground running with exercising at home. Often you just need a little extra motivation and creativity.
1. Build A Home Gym
The most obvious way to work out at home is working out in a home gym, if you are lucky enough to have one with standard gym equipment. By “standard equipment” we mean treadmills, stationary bicycles, benches, bars, dumbbells, exercise machines, etc.
While building a home gym can get expensive if you don’t already have one, depending on the type of gym you’re going for, having a quality gym in your home helps tremendously for staying in shape and also eliminates the need for paying gym membership fees. You can also get creative on a budget with your gym. No need to break the bank.
What Equipment is Necessary for a Home Gym?
What equipment you have in your home gym depends entirely on your budget, your preferred method of working out, and your personal fitness goals. If your budget isn’t huge, that’s completely fine. Start small. Start with just one piece of equipment, and gradually add more as you can afford them. A home gym is a long-term investment in you and your family’s health.
For home cardio exercise, it’s tough to beat a treadmill, which provides you with a way to run without always having to run outside, allowing all-weather runs — including runs during the winter and safe nighttime runs. Other standard cardio machines for the home are the stationary bicycle and elliptical machine.
Any of these machines will provide a quality cardio workout at home, but having home gym equipment is not mandatory for exercising at home, which brings us to the next section:
2. Stick to a workout plan that requires little to no equipment
You don’t need to join a gym or build your own gym with complex and expensive equipment in order to get a good workout. There are many ways in which you can work out without expensive equipment, as well as ways that don’t require any equipment at all.
Such workout plans usually focus on calisthenics and/or bodyweight exercises, such as push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, triceps dips, jumping jacks, planks, etc.
Other types of workouts that require little equipment, if any, are physical activities like yoga or pilates. Often men scoff at these types of workouts, but after trying them they gain a new respect for the workout and those who practice it, not to mention the fact that the men are incredibly sore for days afterward.
3. Use a workout Video / Program
There’s been a somewhat recent resurgence of the “workout video,” with increasing popularity mainly due to the success of programs such as P90X and Shaun T’s INSANITY.
Hundreds of these workout program videos exist today, some good and some not so good. Usually a program’s popularity is equivalent to its usefulness, but not always. (Some of these guys are just incredible at marketing their products.)
In most of these workout videos, a fitness instructor or guru (such as Tony Horton or Shaun T) guides you through an entire workout, which can be meant for any fitness goal and include all kinds of exercises — general muscle building, getting ripped, yoga, kickboxing, etc. — with its intensity varying according to the target audience of the video. Often these programs include several different videos, each with different exercises and usually progressing in difficulty as time goes on.
4. Get Creative
A workout can be anything that gets you moving and your heart pumping. Literally anything. Come up with your own ways of working out at home.
For example, create a TV show workout: While watching your favorite show, make a rule that says during commercials you will do 25 jumping jacks, 20 pushups, and 25 crunches — then if you don’t finish before the show comes back on you have to jog in place until the next commercial. Or something like that. Again, anything can be called a workout as long as you’re substantially increasing your heart rate.
